A great way to make your story pop and define yourself as a character is the use of nostalgic specifics. I was just working with a student the other day who said she had a lot of childhood crushes. I asked her specifically who she had a crush on, and she said, “Disney princes.” I said, “From what movies?” And she said, “The prince from The Little Mermaid.” And right there, I had a nostalgic reference for the time period of her youth. That movie came out in 1989, so we can now visualize her swooning over the hot prince from The Little Mermaid while wearing a scrunchie in her side ponytail. If she had said, “I had a crush on Shang from Mulan” (which came out almost ten years later, in 1998), we would have an image of her swooning over this cartoon heartthrob while wearing platform sneakers and raver pants. Both of these images are much more interesting than simply knowing she had generic childhood crushes.
